And former England midfielder Mason looked in fine spirits just two months after a head injury forced him to retire from playing aged just 26.

Also pictured at the world’s largest commercial sports awards were boxer Chris Eubank Jr, who was a shock loser against British rival George Groves in his last fight in February, and England rugby skipper Dylan Hartley, who this week was ruled out of the summer tour to South Africa as he recovers from concussion.

Awards categories included marketing campaigns, event sponsorship, team participation, PR and film content.

And Premier League champions Manchester City were up for International Marketing Campaign of the Year with “Win an advert for your Wix business”.

And despite another controversial year for biking, British Cycling were also nominated – for best Participation Event – with their HSBC UK City Ride.

But for general sports fans most of the interest comes from which sports stars turned up for the event held in front of 1,700 at Battersea, London.
